The New York Jets thrived early in the game, but failed to score after the first quarter and lost 23-6 to the New York Giants in their final preseason matchup Aug. 28 at MetLife Stadium.
Rookie running back Chip Trayanum, who scored the lone touchdown, was taken to the hospital for a neck injury later in the game. Jets linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball, who made the interception that setup the touchdown, shined throughout the game for defense, but offense struggled with scoring including field goals.
“We just seemed to die on offense as far as just moving the ball,” said Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn.
The Giants won the coin toss and elected to receive first. Jameis Winston filled in to start for Jaxson Dart at quarterback, who did not play. McCrary-Ball intercepted a pass from Winston intended for Odell Beckham Jr. on third down and returned it for 19 yards.
Rookie (QB) Cade Klubnik started for the Jets, while Geno Smith sat out. Klubnik worked towards goal with handoffs to Trayanum. Trayanum ran for the touchdown from the 1-yard line. The extra point attempt was missed by Jets kicker Jason Sanders. Jets defense stepped up. Defensive back Malachi Moore helped safety Jarius Monroe deflect a deep pass from Winston to wide receiver Braxton Berrios, in the endzone, during the Giants’ next possession. A few plays later, McCrary-Ball helped Monroe tackle Berrios, and then forced a fumble, which was recovered by Jets cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers.
“I feel like there was just a continual buildup in everything that Coach AG has implemented through his speeches, through what he wants in practices and to see what he wants to see in each of the games,” McCrary-Ball said about preseason. “I would like to believe that we had a gradual incline in just our attention to detail and our execution.”
The Jets fell behind when the Giants scored at the end of the first quarter following a 6-yard touchdown run by RB Tyrone Tracy Jr. The kick by Giants’ Dominic Zvada was good for the extra point bringing the score to 7-6.
The Jets had possession at the end of the first quarter and start of the second, when Klubnik threw an interception. Zvada scored a field goal for the Giants later in the quarter. Trayanum was injured on the final play before halftime. Klubnik handed him the ball, when he was immediately tackled by Giants linebacker Trace Ford. Trayanum finished with 38 yards on 12 carries. He caught two of two passes for 25 yards.
The Jets did not score in the second half of the game. Klubnik completed 6 of 13 passes for 59 yards. He was sacked once and had one interception. Brady Cook completed three of six passes for 26 yards. He had no interceptions and was not sacked. Bailey Zappe threw two of five for 12 yards. He was sacked twice and threw zero interceptions.
Following preseason, the Jets kept Klubnik and Zappe was signed to the practice squad. The Jets added 16 players to their practice squad. The team waived (K) Cade York, signed Blake Grupe as a new kicker, and signed Sanders to the practice squad.
The Jets open up the 2026-2027 season on the road when they face the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, September 13th at 1pm.
