The New York Knicks made a formal introduction of new Head Coach, Mike Brown at the Knicks Training Facility in Westchester County last Tuesday afternoon.
Brown’s experience includes almost three decades of work with the NBA including coaching with multiple teams in the league during their playoff appearances. He first thanked CEO of Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp., Executive Chairman James L.Dolan and Knicks President Leon Rose and went on to answer questions about how he intends to lead the team to the next championship. “I’m honored and excited to be the new head coach of the New York Knicks,” he said.
Brown last served as head coach with the Sacramento Kings for three seasons (2022-2025) and helped the team reach the playoffs in 2023, winning 48 games in his first year as head coach there. Sacramento had not clinched a playoff spot since 2006. “I can’t just pinpoint one thing,” Brown said when asked what he can share from his experience in his new role with the Knicks. “I learned a lot not just in Sacramento, but throughout my entire career.”
Brown also served as head coach with the Los Angeles Lakers (2011-2012) and the Cleveland Cavaliers (2005-2010 and 2013-2014). He led the Cavaliers to their first NBA Finals appearance during the 2006-2007 season. Brown also worked as an assistant coach for the Washington Wizards (1997-1999), the San Antonio Spurs (2000-2003), the Indiana Pacers (2003-2005), and the Golden State Warriors (2016-2022), winning NBA Championships with the Warriors in 2017, 2018, and 2022 and the Spurs in 2003. According to NBA.com Brown began his coaching career as a video coordinator with the Denver Nuggets in 1992.
The Knicks announced a coaching change June 3 after releasing Tom Thibodeau of his duties as head coach. “Our organization is singularly focused on winning a championship for our fans,” Rose said in a press statement after the change.
The new head coach has big shoes to fill. This year Coach Thibodeau led the Knicks to the NBA Eastern Conference finals, for the first time since 2000.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams had even recognized Coach Thibodeau tweeting: “Thank you, Tom Thibodeau, for your leadership over the last 5 years, rebuilding the @nyknicks and taking us to our first Eastern Finals in 25 years.”
Knicks leadership is optimistic about the future ahead. “Mike has coached on the biggest stages in our sport and brings championship pedigree to our organization,” said Rose. “His experience leading the bench during the NBA Finals, winning four titles as an assistant coach, and his ability to grow and develop players will all help us as we aim to bring a championship to New York for our fans.”
Coach Brown said he’s ready to get started. “I thought what the group did this past year in the playoffs just shows their potential, not just defensively but offensively too,” he said when asked about defensive changes he can make. “It’s about looking forward and putting a plan in place and working with those guys on both ends of the floor.”
