President Donald Trump’s comments about Iran potentially “taking out” Los Angeles or San Diego have California officials pushing back. But the debate over his words comes with a familiar twist: the same country that spent weeks arguing over what former President Barack Obama meant when he said “you didn’t build that” is now debating how seriously to take Trump’s remarks about the destruction of American cities.

With Mayor Karen Bass and other California leaders condemning the comments, the contrast in political reactions is difficult to ignore.

“The role of a leader is to protect and defend their people. It’s horrifying to hear the President suggest that our city should be attacked,” Bass wrote on X. She added, “Keep LA out of your damn mouth.”

But while Trump’s remarks about California prompted condemnation from the left, some of his defenders argued that Democrats are exaggerating or misrepresenting his meaning…. And if you compare that to the Obama era, you’d start to notice a clear pattern.
