Towns Trade To Knicks Was Justified

The New York Knicks made two big moves before the start of the 2024-25 season with the hopes they could go further than they did last year after losing in the second round to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Injuries to key players including OG Anunoby and forward All-Start Julius Randle certainly did help. The Knicks traded Randle to Minnesota for center Karl-Anthony Towns and for the Nets forward Mikal Bridges. Both players were a big reason the team 51 games. They lost captain and guard Jalen Brunson for over a month with a ankle sprain but he looks it will not be a factor when the team, seeded #3 in the Eastern Conference host the #6 seed Detroit Pistons Saturday night. The two teams faced each other last Saturday night with nothing that would improve their playoff position. In the 115-106 loss, head coach Tom Thibodeau played his starters a head scratching and average of 34 minutes.

More concerning was New York’s last to games against the #2 seed Boston Celtics and #1 seed Cleveland Cavaliers. Both games were played at Madison Square Garden where the lost both games. In the 119-117 overtime loss, the Knicks failed to foul Celtics Jayson Tatum and then watch him drain a game tying 3-pointer with 3.1 seconds left. Ex-Knicks Krista’s Porzingis nailed 8, 3-pointers finishing with 34 points.

The following Friday, Cleveland stormed back allowing only 16 Knicks point in the 108-102 win. Cavs Darius Garland putting up 26 points. The Knicks lost all 8 games between Boston and Cleveland. If New York manages to get past Detroit they will have to face either of those team and will not have home court advantage.

Health will not be a factor for the New York Knicks this playoff season. Taking Detroit out early will give them extra rest in the next series.
