The New York Knicks are on a roll! When they hosted the Denver Nuggets this past Wednesday night, they had won 5 of their previous 6 games and 4 in a row. What’s more impressive is who the ins came against. They scored 143 points against the Sacramento Kings. They followed that up scoring another 143 points against one of the best teams in the Western Conference, the Memphis Grizzlies. So, when the Nuggets came to town with 3-time MVP winner Nikola Jokic, New York knew they would have their hands full.
Early foul trouble saw Jokic play only 2 minutes in the first quarter as the Knicks took a slim 31-27 lead as Nuggets guard Jamal Murray scored 11 points. Knicks Jalen Brunson and OG Anunoby paced the Knicks with 8 points each. The teams went back and forth in the second quarter with the Knicks bench contributing to a 60-54 lead with Miles McBride scoring 7 and Precious Achiuwa chipping in 6. The defense only allowed 2 Jokic points and Murray 3.
Denver would not go away as they as Murray scored 12 points getting the Nuggets within 7 points by the end of the third quarter 93-86.
Once again, the Knicks starting 5 scored in double figures with Brunson leading them with 30 points in the 122-112 win. Anunoby finished with 23. Murray finished with a game high 33 while Jokic was held to 17.
Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau was quick to point out the defense Anunoby played on Jokic. “I thought OG’s aggressiveness to start the game was huge for us. They’re a terrific team. They put a lot of pressure of pressure at all times.”
The New York Knicks look to extend their winning streak to 5 games when they host the Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James Saturday night. As impressive as the winning streak is, guard Josh Hart said the team is not focusing on it. “We’re playing good basketball. We’re in a good rhythm. The season is peaks and valleys. We’re just getting better.”
