Cloud’s 21 Not Enough In Loss To NY

Sabrina Ionescu had a game-high 22 points and 9 assists, Jonquel Jones scored 20 points, and the New York Liberty survived a tight contest against the Phoenix Mercury, winning 81-78, on Wednesday, May 29. With the win, New York halted a two-game losing streak, starting the 2024 campaign strong with a 5-2 record.
The Liberty led by as many as 15 points towards the end of the first quarter, but the Mercury outscored New York 24-14 in the second quarter to cut the deficit down to three points at halftime.
In the third, Phoenix outscored New York 15-13, but Ionescu scored 7 of her 22 points, aiding New York to maintain a one point lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Jones scored 10 of her 20 points in the period, including 5 of the team’s final 10 points. Jones’ two free throws with 69 seconds left to play proved to be the go-head baskets for New York’s as they secured the lead for good.
Natasha Cloud led the Mercury with 21. Phoenix, losers of three straight, sit at 3-4.
New York hosts the Washington Mystics on Friday night.
