Black women were tired of the rising cost of keeping their hair together, so many have found a cheaper alternative that delivers salon-worthy results without breaking the bank: booking appointments at their nearest Ulta or JCPenney. While corporate salons aren’t exactly new, more clients are actively pivoting to retail chairs.
The conversation around these retail beauty hubs reached a boiling point after viral discourse over hairstylist India Bridges’ $1,000 sew-in services left some questioning how much is too much to spend on maintaining their hair. Pearl-clutching price tags have sparked a wave of social media complaints about client expectations, declining service quality, and whether the results justify the cost. TikTok creator @jaxicole_momlife called out the disconnect between independent pricing and client respect.
“I love that the girlies are going to Ulta because the stylist has been on this app calling us broke. Y’all have been calling us broke for months,” she said. “Why is everything the same price? And y’all call me broke.”
She went on to explain that while independent hairstylists defend inflated rates as the price you pay for “luxury services” – even on basic installs – consumers are tired of being insulted by prices and policies they find unreasonable.
As you scroll through pages of conversations, women drop selfies and videos of their hair experiences at local Ulta and JCPenney salons, with some sharing the more reasonable prices they paid for their services. Seeing the growing trend, creator Jamaal (@theleograndprince) warned his followers that independent stylists have underestimated their client base and need to tighten up.
“The Black stylist girlies thought they had a lick and now Ulta and JCPennys is on your ass,” he pointed out. “Simple services that y’all are charging them [customers] $200 for, right? But wasn’t y’all just calling them broke? Wasn’t y’all just telling them that your prices are your prices?”
