This year’s US Open descended into chaos, as Serena Williams received three separate code violations in the final match against Naomi Osaka. She was fined a total of $17,000 for the violations of “verbal abuse” of the chair umpire, being warned for coaching, and breaking her racket.
In the second game of the second set, Williams was warned for getting coaching, which is against the rules in Grand Slam matches. She disputed that ruling, continuing to confront the umpire, Carlos Ramos, throughout the match. Williams said cheating “is the one thing I’ve never done, ever”.
