The Shirley Chisholm biopic, starring Regina King, has finally began filming. According to MADAMENOIRE, the initiative was first publicized in February. King will not only star with Terrance Howard in the starring role, but she will also serve as the project’s producer. Regina and her sister, Reina King, own and operate Royal Ties Production Company, which is producing the biopic.

At the start of production in November, King tweeted her delight saying “You would think we planned this! Happy 97th Worthday Mrs. C! Look at God🙏🏾 #ShirleyChisolm.”

Regina King and Netflix have proven to be a good combination. King’s excellence is acknowledged even by Netflix.

“Maaaaan Listen! Y’all got me out here blushing and smiling hard like I just got my braces off. ☺️😁🤠,” Netflix tweeted.

King’s star will undoubtedly soar much higher as a result of the biopic. Following the success of her directorial debut, One Night in Miami, King pledged to hire at least 50% women and non-binary people on all future productions. This is an addition to her Golden Globes acceptance speech for Best Leading Actress in a Motion Picture for If Beale Street Could Talk.

King said in an interview with Insider that she has already surpassed the target.

“well over 50% of our crew were people that did not identify as cis white male[s],” she recalls in reference to the set of One Night in Miami.

Idris Elba and King recently featured in The Harder They Fall. The film received a 93 percent audience rating and an 83 percent critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

With her strong on-screen presence and tremendous behind-the-scenes advocacy, King is surely benefiting us all. The biopic doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll be watching with bated breath to see how King handles the subject of the nation’s first Black congresswoman and presidential candidate.
