A high-level leader in Iran’s national government is one of the latest victims of a China-based viral infection, which has turned up in patients all over the world.

US News reported on Thursday that Masoumeh Ebtekar (pictured) Iran’s Vice President, has tested positive for the coronavirus. There are five different strands of this potentially deadly infection and it can infect humans and animals, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). It is mainly spread from human-to-human contact.

The Iranian state-sponsored media agency released the news about Ebtekar on Thursday (February 27) as the nation struggles to curtail the reach of this emerging international coronavirus epidemic. Ebtekar serves her country as a close adviser of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani. She advises Rouhani on women’s issuesm as well as policy matters that deal with family.

The same way the HIV virus causes AIDS, coronavirus can exist in an incubation form before morphing into the full-blown COVID-19 disease. As a precautionary measure, Vice President Ebtekar was placed under quarntine by Iran’s national health officials. In Iran alone, there are 400 people suspected of carrying the coronavirus. So far, 225 cases have been officially confirmed.
