Eric Adams Shocks NYC by Ending Mayoral Re-Election Bid
*He tried to hang in there, but with his money getting funny and the odds growing against him, New York City Mayor Eric Adams has suspended his re-election campaign just five weeks before the November 4 election. The not-so-surprising move (at least to us) was announced today (09-28-25), via a nearly nine-minute video set to Frank Sinatra’s “My Way.”
Adams, 65, said fundraising issues and intense media scrutiny made it impossible to continue. “Despite all we’ve achieved… I cannot continue my re-election campaign,” he said in the video, filmed with sweeping city skyline views.
Scandals and Investigations Damaged Adams’ Public Image
Adams’ political troubles started with a federal indictment in early 2025. He was charged with bribery and wire fraud involving Turkish officials and real estate developers.
Though he pleaded not guilty, the ongoing case has deeply hurt public trust.
Polls placed Adams in fourth place, trailing Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, independent Andrew Cuomo, and Republican Curtis Sliwa. Even with name recognition, Adams failed to gain traction among voters or donors.
Fundraising Collapse and Media Scrutiny Ended His Campaign
Adams skipped the June Democratic primary to run as an independent. But without party support and the Campaign Finance Board withholding millions in matching funds, his campaign stalled.
He also alienated key voting blocs by praising Donald Trump’s immigration policies in a July White House visit. That move failed to earn conservative support and upset progressives who once backed him.
Race Now Centers on Mamdani, Cuomo, and Sliwa
With Adams out, the mayoral race shifts focus to the top three contenders. Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old DSA-backed candidate, has gained ground with bold ideas like free public transit and rent freezes.
Andrew Cuomo, the former governor making a comeback after resigning in 2021, is backed by establishment donors. Meanwhile, Curtis Sliwa presents himself as the anti-socialist candidate promising law and order.
Trump and White House React to Adams’ Sudden Exit
Donald Trump responded on Truth Social, writing: “Smart move, Eric! Now let’s Make NYC Great Again—without the radical left destroying it.” Trump had previously urged both Adams and Sliwa to step aside to stop Mamdani.
The White House also weighed in, warning that Mamdani’s agenda could “chase jobs out of the city.” The reactions highlight how NYC’s local race is drawing national attention.
