It was a 20-17 comeback victory for the Green Bay Packers over the New York Jets after a walk off field goal in overtime Sunday afternoon in the Meadowlands.
Green Bay overcame an aggressive start by New York’s defense, and their loss of injured players, to score. The Packer’s offense continued to be resilient after they fell behind in the third quarter, but bounced back in the fourth while the team’s defense stepped up and applied more pressure.
“You just got to keep battling and having that one-play mindset and never flinch in the face of adversity,” said Head Coach Matt LaFleur.
Green Bay received first and faced injuries to wide receiver Jayden Reed (neck), on the second play when he was tackled, and to offensive lineman Zach Bako-Bewele (knee), during the third play of their first possession. Both players were carted off. It was a scoreless first quarter for both teams.
“We have a lot of stuff to look at, clean up, and improve on because it definitely was not pretty,” said Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love. “I think later we answered with that touchdown drive.”
Green Bay was first on the scoreboard in the second quarter after Love sent a 6-yard pass to (RB) MarShawn Lloyd. The attempt at the extra point by kicker Trey Smack was good.
The score was tied after a 6-yard touchdown run by (RB) Braelon Allen for the Jets and an extra point added by kicker Jason Sanders. Teams were tied 7-7 at halftime.
Green Bay fell behind after New York scored at the end of the third quarter. (QB) Geno Smith sent a 5-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Garrett Wilson and Sanders’ added an extra point with his kick for the Jets. The Packers trailed 14-7 with about 2:30 minutes left on the clock in the quarter, while the Jets kept the lead into the fourth. Sanders added three more points for New York with a field goal during their second possession in the fourth quarter.
Love moved the Packers closer to the goal in their next possession and then completed a 3-yard pass to (WR) Christian Watson for a touchdown. Smack’s kick was good for the extra point. The Jets were unable to score on their next possession and punted. Green Bay used runs to move towards the goal. The score was tied at 17 after Smack kicked a successful 34-yard field goal for the Packers. He returned to kick 26-yard field goal for Green Bay after the Jets failed to score in their first possession of overtime.
Love completed 16 of 29 passes for 145 yards and threw two touchdowns for the Packers. He was sacked three times.
Smith finished 27 of 41 for 247-yards and threw one touchdown. He was sacked four times. The Packers defense appeared to apply more pressure on Smith after the first half. Three of the sacks were after halftime.
“I just think as a unit with the o-line in the back, and some tight ends, we could have done a little better today to help Geno out,” said (RB) Breece Hall about Smith.
The Packers defense had 70 combined tackles and assists in the game and the the Jets defense had 46.
Coach LaFleur said after the game Reed had movement in all his extremities and
would stay over night. He said Bako-Bewele’s injury did not look good and he could be out for a while. The Packers next face the Atlanta Falcons.
