Nicole Black called 911 on July 4 after finding her daughter collapsed in the bathtub in Tampa Bay. Crystal Galloway, 30, had given birth only six days earlier. Black says that the paramedics officers who arrived after the 911 call suggested her daughter had been drinking, and questioned whether she could afford a $600 ambulance.

“They never asked us if we had insurance, which we do,” Black said, explaining why she felt that she and her daughter were racially stereotyped. After several minutes of asking paramedics to drive her daughter to the hospital, she drove there herself. A CT scan showed that Galloway had internal bleeding in her brain. Galloway passed away few days later, after slipping into a coma.

Four rescue paramedics were placed on leave for failing to check Galloway’s vital signs, and they will soon face a disciplinary hearing. These paramedics claim that the deputies present had already spoken to Black about driving to the hospital, and they were not involved in the discussion. Meanwhile, those officers have been cleared of any wrongdoing by the Sheriff’s Office.
