Former chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC) accepted the claim that he was elected to the position several years ago because he is a Black man.

Michael Steele said at the Ronald Reagan dinner held over the weekend at CPAC communications headed by Ian Walters that he was indeed elected RNC chair based on his race. “We elected Mike Steele as chairman because he was a black guy, that was the wrong thing to do.”

“We were somewhat lost as a group, we had just elected the first African-American president, and that was a big deal,” said Steele.

He added that was hill and that “we got over it. But it was something that we “felt was big and something that we were all proud of and we weren’t sure what to do, and in a little bit of cynicism what did we do?” said Steel.

The former RNC chair said that Walters called him and tried to apologize, but he rejected the apology.

“He did call and he tried to explain himself and said that he was thinking when he relayed it back to Barack Obama’s election, and I apologize. I just said, you know, that’s just not acceptable, that is not enough,” Steel recalled.

Steele said he cannot believe that an official of CPAC would go on stage, in front of an audience, and say something like that. “I have been a strong supporter of CPAC for many years, and I thought they raised them better than that here,” he added.
