The New York Yankees didn’t need any extra motivation when they visited the team that prevented them from winning their 28th World Series Championship last year. Not only did the Los Angeles Dodgers win the chip but they did it on the Yankees home field. So, when the Bronx Bombers began a 3-game series last Friday night, they wanted some sort of revenge even though the games were played at the end of May going into the first day of June. The start of game 1, was just the start they were looking for.
Captain Aaron Judge began the game blasting his 19th homer of the year, a solo shot in the first inning. Three more Yankees would join the home run parade as Trent Grisham, Paul Goldschmidt and Austin Wells blasted solo shots giving New York an early 5-2 lead. Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani matched Judge by smashing a solo shot in the bottom of the first. The Yankees would not score again the rest of the games as the Los Angeles scored 4 runs in the 6th and 2 runs in the 7th in their come from behind 8-5 win. Yanks starter Max Fried could not take advantage of the early lead as he gave up 6 earned runs and 8 hits in 5 innings. Game 2 would evem be worse for the Bronx Bombers.
Before the notorious late Dodger fans could get out of the parking lot, Los Angeles blitzed Yankees starter Bill Warren as he never made out of the 2nd inning. When he was removed, he gave up 7 runs and 6 hits as the Dodgers opened up a 10-0 lead. The Yankees relievers fared no better as they gave up 11 more earned runs and 15 hits in the 18-2 rout. For the second straight game, Judge would go deep twice hitting solo home runs that accounted for the teams only runs. When they played the final game of the series Sunday night on national television, the Yankees were looking to avoid losing for the 4th straight time against the Dodgers on the road.
The Yankees trotted out Ryan Yarbrough who was a member of the Dodgers last year until he was traded to Toronto Blue Jays at the trading deadline. Toronto traded him to the Yankees as spring training came to end signing a 1-year, $2 million dollar contract. Yarbrough kept the Dodgers confused with his assortment of change-up, sinkers and sliders. When Yarbrough came out after the 6th inning, he only allowed 1-run, 4 hits while striking out 5. Ohtani was 0 for 3 against Yarbrough. Yankees manager Aaron boone had praise for Yarbrough. “Yarbs getting the ball and played a really great game to give us a really good trip going back home into an off day.”
In the 7-3 Yankees win, DJ LeMahieu had a monster night going 4 for 5 and driving in 2 runs. Said LeMahieu after his first 4 hit game since 2021, “it felt good. It’s good to get some results. Obviously, a great win tonight.” Ben Rice added a solo home run, his second of the series.
Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto entered the game with a scintillating 1.97 ERA but he only lasted 3.2 innings giving up 4 earned runs and 7 hits.
The New York Yankees came home Tuesday night to begin a 3-game series against the Cleveland Guardians. Hated and division rival Boston Red Sox come to town Friday. It is the first time they will face each other this year.
