The Yankees won a series for the first time in what seems like forever, taking 3 out of 4 from the 3rd place Tigers. Luis Severino bounced back with a gem of a start in game 1 of the series, throwing 7 and striking out 8. A pair of homers from the Yanks two best hitters, Aaron Judge and Gleyber Torres, powered the Yankees to a 4-1 victory.

Game 2 saw pitcher Michael King, who is primarily a reliever, deliver another great starting outing, allowing zero runs through 4, with 5 strikeouts. Closer Clay Holmes got into some trouble in the 9th, but managed to seal the deal and the Yanks won 4-2. Holmes has struggled as of late, with a 7.84 ERA in his past 11 appearances.

In game 3, the Yanks had their best offensive showing of the series, beating Detroit 6-2. Torres homered for the 3rd consecutive game. and DJ LeMahieu and Giancarlo Stanton each added dingers of their own. New York’s most valuable player of the season and likely Cy Young award winner, Gerrit Cole, had another good outing, pitching 6 and giving up 2, with 7 strikeouts.

In the final game of the series, the Yankees mustered just 2 hits through the 1st 8 innings. Down 3-0 in the 9th, some small ball led to 2 runners on for the rookie Volpe, who came through with a big 3-run shot to right field. With the game tied in the top of the 10th, Torres committed a costly throwing error at second base, resulting in a 4-3 loss for New York.

The Bronx Bombers went on to face the Houston Astros to start of the month of September. A Houston team that has been a thorn in side of the Yankees in recent years. In fact, you have to go back to September of 2013 to see the last time New York swept the Astros.

Led by recently called up rookie Jasson (The Martian) Domínguez who homered in 2 of the 3 games, the Yankees swept Houston bringing their record to 68-69. It was their first series sweep since taking three games against Kansas City from July 21-23.

Manager Aaron Boone has not had a lot to smile recently but praised the young phenom from the Dominican Republic. “When he goes up to the plate, there’s not a lot of anxiety. He plays the game with ease,” he said.

The New York Yankees are still on the outside looking in for a wild card spot. As of this report as of this report, they had won 7 of their last 10 games but remain 8 games for a wild card berth. They began a 3 game series against the Tigers Tuesday night before hosting the Brewers and Red Sox (4 games). Saturday, September 9th, they will host Old timers Day. Derek Jeter is expected to attend for the first time since he retired.
