A man who was once arguably the most powerful person in the film industry got another crushing legal punch to the gut as he was attending a court hearing in New York City.

Harvey Weinstein (pictured, center) appeared in court on Monday (January 6) as jury selection occurred in a criminal case against the disgraced film executive, which is being prosecuted by the state of New York.

Weinstein, 67, faces multiple aggravated sexual assault charges in this case related to allegations made by two different women who claimed he raped them in 2006 and 2013.

In the 2006 case, the Miramax Films co-founder allegedly performed a sex act forcibly on an unwilling woman in the New York City area. Another woman alleged that Weinstein raped her in a hotel room in Manhattan, New York. Page Six reported that protesters angrily chanted outside as Weinstein entered the NYC courthouse where jury selection ahead of his trial was scheduled.

The movie mogul has pleaded not guilty to all the criminal charges he faces in Manhattan Criminal Court. If convicted, Weinstein faces a life sentence with parole eligibility after 25 years.

Meanwhile, on Monday, in Los Angeles County, California, the District Attorney’s office in that jurisdiction announced new charges that Weinstein faces. According to National Public Radio, Los Angeles County District Attorney Jackie Lacey held a news conference on January 6 announcing the charges her office filed that day against Weinstein.

“We believe the evidence will show that the defendant used his power and influence to gain access to his victims and then commit violent crimes against them,” Lacey said at the news conference.
