In a bizarre move that only Brooklyn Nets Head Coach Jacque Vaughn could explain, the Nets on December 27th sat their starters against the Milwaukee Bucks, a team who feature two of the best players in NBA history, and were beaten at home 144-122. This after avoiding embarrassment the night before by narrowly beating a Detroit Pistons team who set the NBA’s single season losing streak. Cam Johnson, Spencer Dinwiddie, and Nic Claxton all sat against Milwaukee while the other two starters, Mikal Bridges and Cam Thomas, played the first twelve minutes and then sat the final three quarters of the loss in Brooklyn.
Vaughn defended the team’s decision to sit the starters by saying that he cared about the players health and did not want to put them at risk of injury due to the rigorous nature of the 82 game regular season. It is a move that may not have caused a major public uproar because of the small fan base and smaller spotlight playing off Broadway, but had a move like that been pulled at Madison Square Garden there would have been a far bigger fallout. Tickets are expensive and fans felt fleeced.
