The first quarterback sacks of the game were sparks to kindle the New York Giants into action, and then combustion, as they blazed in their 14-7 win against the Washington Commanders Sunday in the Meadowlands.

Defense ignited a beacon of hope in the first quarter and quarterback Tyrod Taylor fanned the flames in the second quarter. Six sacks, one interception and a blocked field goal by defense combined with Taylor’s two touchdown passes helped secure the win.

“I thought we did a lot of good things,” said head coach Brian Daboll. “It was a little bit closer than it needed to be.”

Daboll felt they left points on the field. New York did not score in the first quarter, but the Giants defense prevented Washington from getting on the scoreboard with efforts by linebacker Micah McFadden and defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence who combined for a sack and defensive end Leonard Williams who made the team’s second sack of the game.

The Giants were first on the scoreboard in the second quarter as Taylor connected with tight end Darren Waller for a 15-yard touchdown, Waller’s first as a Giant. “Making a play like that, it’s what we needed,” Waller said. “It kind of gave us life.”

It was a special week for he and his wife Kelsey Plum who plays basketball for the Las Vegas Aces and won the WNBA championship earlier during the week. He said it’s not easy living across the country from each other. “I want to be close to the person I love, so yeah it’s tough,” he said.

Waller was able to support Plum across the water at the Barclay’s Center for WNBA championship game. “It’s cool life moments,” he said. “Being able to be there for her and just being able to make a play for this team.”

Waller led the team with seven catches for 98 yards in the game.

Rookie Cornerback Deonte Banks grabbed the first interception of his NFL career in the second quarter paving the way for a 32-yard touchdown catch-and-run pass from Taylor to running back Saquon Barkley.

The Giants went to halftime ahead 14-0. New York did not score the remainder of the game. Running back Brian Robinson Jr. scored the Commanders first touchdown of the game in the third quarter. Giants defense prevented the Commanders from scoring again including stopping them in the red zone in the fourth quarter when almost a minute remained in the game and with a blocked field goal by Leonard Williams earlier in the fourth quarter. “It felt great,” Coach Daboll said about the block. “It was great.”

Daboll felt defense played good complimentary game. “Got after the quarter back,” he said. “Made a critical fourth down stop at the end of the game.”

Daboll complimented Taylor and the game he played.  “Played well,” he said.  “Took care of the ball. Made good decisions. Threw the ball where it was supposed to be thrown.”

Taylor completed 18 of 29 for 279 yards.  Commanders quarterback Sam Howell finished 22 of 42 for 249-yards. Taylor became the first African American quarterback for the Giants to win a game. Said Taylor of the win, “it felt good. I mean anytime you can win at home always is big, especially just the way our season has been going. “
