Clowney Can’t Do It By Himself

The Brooklyn Nets were without their full roster as they fell to the Detroit Pistons in a 113-98 loss Wednesday night at Barclays Center.

The night created a spotlight for other players to shine like Noah Clowney who led the team with a career-high 29-points and Tyrese Martin who had a double-double. Yet with their contributions, the Nets strong start and the extra push in the fourth quarter were not enough to help them climb out of the hole they dug in the second and third quarters.

“Very proud of this group, keep fighting,” said Head Coach Jordi Fernandez about the effort with so many team members out. “Obviously what we have to look at is what we can do better.”

The Nets played without Bojan Bogdanovic, Maxwell Lewis, De’Anthony Melton, Ben Simmons, Cam Thomas, and Dariq Whitehead, who were inactive and without Cam Johnson, D’Angelo Russell, Day’Ron Sharpe and Trendon Watford who did not dress. Despite missing key players, the Nets started strong against the Pistons who had an 18-18 record prior to the game. Brooklyn had five steals and trailed only by two points at the end of the first quarter (27- 25). However, they fell farther behind in the second and third quarters. They trailed by 10 points and had only one steal by half time (59-49) and were behind 91-70 by the end of the third quarter. They had two steals in the third quarter alone. In the fourth quarter Brooklyn improved their play and out-scored Detroit 28-22.

“They had a lot of transition points,” said Clowney about Detroit in the 2nd & 3rd quarters. “Those are the ones that hurt. You know, a turnover into a dunk, a bad miss into a dunk.”

Clowney finished with six rebounds, three assists, two steals and his career-high 29 points, including five 3-pointers. Nic Claxton added 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and a steal. Martin’s double-double included 12 points and 10 rebounds. He had four assists and a steal.

“Again, keep fighting until the end,” Coach Fernandez said. “Winning the fourth quarter that’s what’s important for me.”

The Nets return to the Barclays Center January 21st to face the New York Knicks.
