Shanelle Booker has made history as the first Black person and Black woman to lead the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Georgia. Appointed as Acting U.S. Attorney on January 12, Booker now oversees federal legal operations across 70 counties and a population of more than two million people. Her historic role follows the resignation of Peter D. Leary, who held the position since 2021.

Booker’s career is marked by an extensive range of legal experience, having prosecuted cases involving violent crime, public corruption, and sex trafficking since joining the office in 2015. In nearly a decade of service, she has held leadership roles including Criminal Division Chief, Criminal Civil Rights Coordinator, and First Assistant U.S. Attorney. Her work has consistently reflected her commitment to justice, making her a natural choice for this pivotal role.

A native of Riverdale, Georgia, Booker has also made significant contributions to her community. She mentors young girls through programs like the Girl Squad Mentoring Program and promotes literacy through initiatives such as the Read United Program. Her work with organizations like the Just the Beginning Foundation aims to inspire underrepresented students to pursue careers in law. She has also volunteered for the Georgia High School Mock Trial Competition and served on the board of the Central Georgia Empowerment Fund.

In her new position, Booker will lead efforts to prosecute federal crimes such as terrorism, child exploitation, and fraud, while defending the United States in civil cases. She has emphasized her commitment to collaboration with law enforcement and community partners to ensure justice and public safety. “It is an honor for me to serve the citizens of the Middle District of Georgia,” Booker said, reaffirming her dedication to the district’s legal and community priorities.

Booker’s appointment not only signals progress in representation within federal leadership but also highlights her dedication to service beyond the courtroom. An active member of Bibb Mount Zion Baptist Church and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., she embodies the principles of leadership and mentorship that continue to shape her career and community impact.
