A longtime staple of the old guard and their heir apparent in the world of women’s professional tennis clashed for the fifth time during a semifinal round at 2021’s Australian Open.
Naomi Osaka (pictured left) and Serena Williams (pictured right) went head-to-head in an epic rematch of 2018’s U.S. Open. Williams, 39, was looking to win the 24th Grand Slam championship of her overwhelmingly dominant career. However, Osaka, 23, dampened the record-breaking hopes of Williams in a decisive victory, scoring 6-3, 6-4.

Ever the classy competitor, Williams walked to the net in the middle of the tennis court and embraced Osaka, a young woman who looks at the elder Williams as her idol. After losing her contentious battle with Osaka, which she could have won if she made fewer mistakes, she placed her hand over her chest to roaring applause and a standing ovation from the crowd.
“If I ever say farewell. I wouldn’t tell anyone…I’m done,” Williams tearfully said at the end of her post-match news conference.
