Santa Clara, California – Well at least Aaron Rodgers made it past 4 plays when he was behind center facing the reigning NFC Champion San Fransisco 49ers Monday night at Levi’s Stadium. The Jets did not trade for Rodgers to watch him hand off the ball. That’s just what they did to start the first quarter. The team ran the ball 7 times only gaining 15 yards. It wasn’t until the Jets decided to unleash Rodger’s arm that they were able to move the ball. At the end of the first quarter, Rodgers completed 7 of 9 passes for 64 yards as they overcame an early turnover to take a 7-3 lead. The Niners would add another field goal cutting the lead to 1 (7-6) before taking the lead for good.

9ers quarterback Brock Purdy (19-29, 231 yards) marched the team downfield in 12 plays, 87 yards resulting in a 2-yard run by Deebo Samuels extending the lead to 13-7. The Jets offense continued to struggle as Rodgers and company would go 3 and out on the next possession. San Fransisco added another field goal taking a 16-7 halftime lead. It would only get worse for Gang Green in the second half.

The 49ers were without all purpose back Christian McCaffrey (high ankle sprain) but back-up running back Jordan Mason more than picked up the slack as he steamrolled the Jets defense. By games end, Mason rumbled for 147 yards and 1 touchdown. The closest the Jets would get (26-13) was when Rodgers found wide receiver Allen Lazard for a 36-yard touchdown pass. Head coach Robert Saleh decided to go for the 2-point conversion but the attempt failed. San Fran would tack on 6 more points closing out the game 32-19. The defense the Jets established last year, was a no show. San Fransisco showed why they made it to the Super Bowl last year.

“That’s a championship outfit,” said Saleh afterwards. “They introduced us to some championship football.” Rodgers, (13-21, 167 yards, 1 td, 1 int) after losing all of last year 4 plays into the season was not entirely pleased with his performance. “I can play better,” he began. “I felt overall l was getting the ball out pretty good, but we had some opportunities that l would like back.”

The Jets travel to Tennessee Sunday to face a team that lost to the Chicago Bears 24-17. It was the debut of #1 draft pick Caleb Williams who finished his day completing 14 of 29 passes for 93 yards. At one point, the Titans had a 17-3 lead before folding. It will a shorter week for the Jets as they will play the following Thursday night against division rival New England Patriots.
