Major League baseball celebrated the 75th anniversary of Brooklyn Dodgers Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier with every player wearing his number 42. The New York Mets were also celebrating the life and accomplishments of #41 Tom Seaver by unveiling a statue of his likeness outside of CitiField.

On a gorgeous afternoon in Queens, the Mets improved their early season record to 6-2 with another sterling performance by newly acquired starter Chris Bassett in the 10-3 Mets win.

New York got all the runs they needed before the end of the 5th inning. Pete Alonso put the Mets on the board early with 2 sacrifice flies. Robinson Cano (4th inning) hit his first home run (opposite field) and first home run in Citi Field extending the lead to 3-0. Fransisco Lindor joined the home run party the following inning blasting a 2-run shot to increase the score 5-0.
Meanwhile, Bassitt was cruising along. In his debut against Washington, he threw 6 shutout innings. Against the Diamondbacks, Bassitt did not give up a run in the first 5. The streak ended in the 6th when he gave up a solo shot to D Backs catcher Daulton Varsho. It would be the last inning for Bassitt who threw 98 pitches. “Yeah, it’s awesome,” Bassitt said of pitching on opening day. “A lot more obstacles to work through. But you always want to win the first one.”

The Mets poured it on in the 8th. First, Starling Marte hits a 2-run Homer. Lindor then follows it up with his second homer of the day. It was the 4th time in his career Lindor hit a home run from both sides of the plate. “It was a great day to be a New York Met today,” he said.

With an abbreviated spring training and a brand new albeit experienced manager, no one knew what kind of team the New York Mets would be. After the first 8 games (6-2) the 43,820 sold out crowd liked what they saw.
