Jon Jones, the consensus GOAT of the MMA, is just a man as it turned out. Many felt that the controversial unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46) for Jones should have gone to the young challenger Dominick Reyes (12-1). Still, despite a crushing loss, Reyes achieved something equally as important—he proved that Jon “Bones” Jones is capable of losing.

From the jump, Reyes pushed the pace on Jones (26-1). He used his superior boxing and angles to cut Jones off and land a series of big shots—including an uppercut that rattled the champ. He kept the pressure on Jones for three rounds, but began to lose steam in rounds four and five, as the challenger had never fought more than three rounds. Jones won the final two rounds, out striking Reyes and securing a series of takedowns.

Was the fight a robbery? No. Even UFC President Dana White admitted that ex-UFC matchmaker Joe Silva scored the fight a draw. Still, to see the champ, who set the record for most consecutive title defenses (14), win by such narrow margins begs the question, “How long before Jon Jones loses?”

If his recent bout with Reyes is any indication, then we may be looking at a new light heavyweight king in the near future.
