St John’s University is riding high into the NCAA Tournament after knocking off Creighton University in the Big East Tournament Final Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. St John’s got 27 points in the second half from Big East Player of the Year RJ Luis Jr as the Red Storm won 82-66.

The win marks the first time since 2000 that St John’s has won the Big East Tournament. The event has been hosted at Madison Square since 1983 and this is just the fourth time St John’s has won the tournament. “I don’t think it settled in yet,” Luis Jr said to reporters after the game. “Just still trying to soak it in, and it’s just crazy how much you can speak things into existence and just watch it all come together.”

St Johns now enters the 64-team NCAA Tournament on Thursday night where they will play Omaha University in Providence, Rhode Island. 2000 was also the last time St John’s won a game in the NCAA Tournament. The previous year in 1999 they made it to the elite eight. St John’s has never won a national championship and were in the Final Four last in 1985.
