Inmates at North Carolina’s Hyde Correctional Institute are protesting in support of a nationwide prisoner strike to call attention to the deep issues that plague the prison system. Specifically, the are protesting low inmate wages, unlivable facilities, and harsh sentences.

It is not clear exactly how widespread the protests have been, but activists say they have shown a new ability to reach inmates across the country, at a time when prison deaths and unrest frequent the news.

The executive director of the Human Rights Defense Center says, “Prisoners aren’t oblivious to their reality, they see people dying around them. They see the financial exploitation. They see the injustice.”
