According to news outlets, Police in Peshawar, Pakistan, are hunting for an alleged faith healer who allegedly convinced a pregnant woman to hammer a nail into her head in order to guarantee the birth of a son.

The strange incident was initially reported by Dawn, a Peshawar news outlet. According to Dawn, the anonymous mother had three girls and was desperate to have a son because she was scared that if she had another girl, her husband would divorce her.

She then went to an unlicensed religious healer, who told her she needed to pound a nail into her head.

“She is three months pregnant and because of her husband’s fear she went to the faith healer who gave her taweez, things to recite and the nail,” one of the hospital officials attending to the woman at the Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar told Dawn. “The victim then returned home and hammered the nail in her head.”

Family members heard the woman screaming in anguish and attempted to remove the nail but they were unable to. Dawn stated that they eventually rushed her to the hospital.

When the woman arrived to Lady Reading Hospital, surgeons successfully removed the nail in a surgery, said Dr. Haider Suleman Khan, a resident neurosurgeon at the hospital.

“She said that a woman in her locality did the same and gave birth to a boy even though the ultrasound had shown her unborn child to be a girl,” Khan added.
