The Knicks returned to the scene of their first-round playoff clincher a season ago and picked up where they left off with a convincing win over Joel Embiid and the reeling Philadelphia 76ers. The NBA’s 2023 MVP returned from injury and suspension Tuesday night and the Knicks rolled them 111-99. The Knicks had six players score in double figures including a team high 24 points from OG Anunoby. Karl Anthony Towns finished with 23 points and 13 rebounds, and Josh Hart recorded a triple double with 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists.
Joel Embiid finished with only 13 points in 26 minutes and made just 2 of 11 shots from the field. “He certainly was rusty, both rusty a little bit I think, and conditioning showed up fairly early,” Philadelphia Head Coach Nick Nurse said of Embiid after the game. “I’ve seen him kind of play through that before, kind of respond in the second half after being on a layoff a little bit. He seemed to do it a little bit but then I thought he got a little tired again in the fourth, but again it’s probably to be expected. I thought he played with some good competitive spirit for what he could do out there.”
The game was also the first in the NBA’s second season of the NBA Cup, an in-season tournament that crowns a winner in December in Las Vegas. The Knicks are in a group with Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Orlando, and Charlotte. Each team in the group plays each other once and the winner of the group will move on to the quarterfinals round. Overall, the Knicks record moves to 5-5 and Philadelphia slips to 2-8. The Knicks are back in action Wednesday night when they face Chicago at home. New York then hosts the Brooklyn Nets Friday and Sunday.
