Pressure Is On Saleh

The New York Jets overcame a slow start, led by newcomer quarterbacks, as they defeated the Washington Commanders in a 20-17 preseason victory Saturday afternoon at MetLife Stadium.
The Jets were without veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and Tyrod Taylor played only in the first quarter. Quarterbacks Adrian Martinez and Andrew Peasley, stepped up to show off their skills in the preseason win. “Overall, I thought both quarterbacks executed really well, especially in situational football, the receivers did a great job coming down with those balls,” Jets head coach Robert Saleh said about Martinez and Peasley, following the game.
Martinez, a former United Football League (UFL) star and the league’s 2024 Most Valuable Player, completed six of 10 passes for 104 yards. Peasley completed 8 of 11 passes for 73 yards. “Yeah, just keep building confidence & running the system,” Peasley said about what he wants to work on before the next game. “It’s a big play book. Keep learning. I’m around two really good vets, Aaron and Tyrod. Just keep learning their wisdom.”
Jayden Daniels the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft by the Commanders and the 2023 Heisman Trophy winner completed 2 of 3 passes for 45 yards and threw one touchdown in the opening drive for his team.
Taylor started for the Jets in their first possession and threw 1 of 2 passes for -1 yards in the game. He was sacked in the first quarter.
Peasley replaced Taylor and threw the Jet’s first touchdown to wide receiver Jason Brownlee in the second quarter.
The Jets’ defense warmed up and held the Commanders to only one field goal in the second quarter. New York offense pushed ahead. Zuerlein kicked a 56-field goal for New York right before halftime and teams were tied at 10.
The Jet’s defense kept the Commanders from scoring in the third quarter and teams were still tied at 10 by the end of the quarter.
Washington scored a touchdown to start the fourth quarter. Jets had success on their first drive to start the fourth quarter. Martinez connected with wide receiver Brandon Smith, another former UFL player, on a 37-yard pass that pushed New York towards the end zone. “Yeah, over the two weeks that I’ve been here I’ve been able to build up some trust with him,” he said about Smith. “I feel like I can trust him out there, along with some of those other guys, too.”
Running back Israel Abanikanda scored the touchdown. Seibert kicked a field goal to push the Jets ahead and end the game.
Jets’ defense had 40 total tackles and one sack. Commanders defense had 33 total tackles and one sack .
The Jets next travel to North Carolina to take on the Panthers Saturday Aug. 17.
