Ashanti Downey, a 21-year-old from Sanford, North Carolina, remains in critical condition after suffering severe burns in a horrifying attack earlier this month. Downey, who graduated high school in 2022, was doused in gasoline and set on fire while walking to a Dollar General store on December 16. Authorities have since arrested Jami Raiziah Griffin, 23, charging him with multiple felonies, including attempted murder.

The incident, described by Harnett County Sheriff Wayne Coats as “one of the most heinous crimes” his department has encountered, left Downey with second and third-degree burns on 70% of her body. Emergency responders transported her to Central Carolina Hospital, where she continues to fight for her life. Investigators say Griffin, who lived with Downey and knew her, acted alone, but the motive remains under scrutiny, with theories ranging from domestic violence to gang-related violence.

Griffin appeared in court on December 30, where a judge set his bond at $1 million and issued a no-contact order with Downey or her family. He faces charges of felony attempted murder, felony assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, and misdemeanor assault on a female. The severity of the charges reflects the calculated and brutal nature of the attack, authorities said.

Downey’s mother, Donecia Davis, expressed anguish over the ordeal, saying, “How could they do this to my baby?” The family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover Downey’s mounting medical expenses, with nearly $103,000 raised so far. Supporters from across the country have expressed solidarity with Downey, hoping for her recovery.

As investigators continue to unravel the case, the attack has drawn attention to issues of interpersonal violence and community safety. Sheriff Coats emphasized the gravity of the crime, noting the ongoing commitment to securing justice for Downey and ensuring the safety of others.
