New roster moves and defensive efforts by the New York Jets, although promising, proved to be ineffective in their 30-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at MetLife Stadium.
2012 Super Bowl Champion and MVP quarterback Joe Flacco started for Sam Darnold (shoulder injury) and Jets defense stepped up at the beginning of the game. The changes were insufficient and the offense needed to score, as they looked to come away with their first win of 2020 Sunday afternoon at MetLife stadium. “The biggest thing is the defense did a good job in the first half,” said Jets Head Coach Adam Gase looking for positives. “I thought they did a really good job of keeping Kyler (Murray) in the pocket and making it tough on him. They played good up front for a long time. We couldn’t play complimentary football on offense.”
The Jets offense was unable to get on the scoreboard until the second quarter. A pick by linebacker Avery Williamson helped set the sequence for a field goal by Sam Ficken, which brought the score to 7-3. Williamson intercepted a pass Murray intended for wide receiver Christian Kirk. New York was unable to make get into the end zone settling for another field goal. Williamson was one of the top leaders in tackles/assists. CB Pierre Desir led the Jets defense with eight tackles and Williamson had six. “I’ve just been trying to get a turnover since I’ve been back, just been trying to get a forced fumble or something,” Williamson said. “End up getting a pick and just flying to the ball and just making something happen. But definitely, it was good. I wish I would’ve got into the end zone.”

Making his first start of the year, Flacco finished the day 18 of 33 completed passes for 195 yards. The Jets only touchdown came in the third quarter with 5:59 remaining. Flacco finding wide receiver Jamison Crowder for the touchdown. The Jets trailed 17-10 and could not score the reminder of the game.
Arizona’s defense held Jets receivers at bay, but allowed Flacco to run for first downs. “Getting those first downs with my legs, and it always feels good to be able to do that, and get into a little bit of a rhythm or try to get the offense into a little bit of a rhythm,” he said. The Ravens traded Flacco to Denver in 2019. He signed a 1-year deal with Gang Green after suffering a neck injury costing him the second half of last year with the Broncos. “We had some individual plays that were good, but we just weren’t able to stack anything on top of each other and get ourselves in that rhythm where we could put their defense on their heels a little bit,” he concluded..
The Jets have now fallen to 0-5. The NFL announced multiple changes to game schedules following the announcements of teams effected by Covid-19. The Jets were originally scheduled to play the Los Angeles Chargers Oct. 18. Now they will travel to Florida to play the Miami Dolphins. It has not been determined if Darnold will be cleared to play.
