Going into the division game against the San Fransisco 49ers at Lambeau field Saturday night, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers post season record was 0-3 against San Fran. 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had never played in a game where the temperature was below 40 degrees. When San Fran kicked off to Green Bay, it was 11 degrees with the wind making it feel like zero. By games end, the 49ers would extend Rodgers streak to 0-4 stunning the Packers in their come from behind 13-10 victory.
Green Bay wasted no time getting on the board the first time they had the ball. Rodgers moving them down 69 yards in 10 plays as running back AJ Dillon runs it in from 6-yards out giving them an early 7-0 lead. San Fransisco goes 3 and out before the first turnover off the game. With the Packers on the move on the 49ers 42, Rodgers finds tight end Marcedes Lewis who is quickly hit by San Fran’s linebacker Fred Warner. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw scoops up the fumble. The Niners could not take advantage of the turnover going 3 and out on the following possession.
The rest of the half saw the teams trade punts before San Fransisco committed their first turnover right before halftime. Garoppolo, starting on his own 23, moves the team down to the Green Bay 19, looking to put their first points on the board. Looking for tight end Greg Kittle, safety Adrian Amos comes up with the interception. The 9ers special team would then come up with the first of their two big plays of the day.
Green Bay began their last drive of the first half on their own 4-yard line with .56 left. 5 plays later and after a deep 75-yard completion (Rodgers to running back Aaron jones) the Packers are poised to add 3 more points. Green Bay’s Mason Crosby attempts a 39-yard field goal but it is blocked by 49ers safety James Ward.
Neither team could muster any offense in the third quarter with the Niners finally getting on the board after a Robbie Gould 39-yard field goal reducing the Packers lead to 7-3. Once again, San Fransisco’s special team came up big.
Back deep in their own territory, Green Bay attempts a punt from their own 12-yard line. San Fran’s defensive end Jordan Willis busts through the line, blocking the punt which sails high in the air. When it finally comes down 9ers safety Talanoa Hufanga scoops it up and scampers into the end zone for the touchdown tying the game at 10.
Rodgers and Green Bay get the ball back with 4:36, starting at their own 29, left looking for the game winning score. It didn’t happen as they gave the ball back to Garoppolo after 3 Rodgers incomplete passes. It was now the 49ers chance to steal the game. Garoppolo Completed 2 passes for 26 yards. After another 18 yards on the ground, Gould connects on a 45-yard, game winning field goal.
The San Fransisco 49ers await the winner of the Los Angeles Rams, Tampa Bay Buccaneers game which takes place in Tampa at 3pm today.
