The Brooklyn Nets came from behind to win 111-108 against the Los Angeles Lakers at Barclays Center Monday evening.

The Nets had lost seven games in a row and coach Jordi Fernández had talked about the importance of rebounding in his pregame interview. Brooklyn was able to defend Luka Dončić, undeterred by his triple double, to out-score and out-rebounded the Lakers in the fourth quarter and close out the game.

“Obviously the message about rebounding is important and we as coaches are going to try to help them,” said Fernández. “The path we want to take is to get 1% better and then a year from now we’ll be a different team.”

The Nets trailed 28-16 at the end of the first quarter. A 3-pointer from Cam Johnson pushed the Nets ahead to lead 48-47 at halftime. The Nets returned from halftime focused, energized and out-scored the Lakers 33-32 in the third quarter. The Lakers tied the score several times in the third quarter, but did not move beyond a two point lead. A 3-pointer from Tyrese Martin gave the Nets an 81-79 lead to end the 3rd quarter.

Brooklyn outscored Los Angeles 30-29 in the fourth quarter. Brooklyn improved in rebounding in the second half of the game. They were out-rebounded by Los Angeles 12-7 in the third quarter. However, they turned the tables in the fourth quarter and had 12 total rebounds. The Lakers had seven rebounds in the fourth quarter alone.

“I think we got hurt pretty bad in Charlotte on the boards,” Cam Johnson said about their last game when they were out-rebounded 50-37 by the Hornets. “Making sure that didn’t happen today.”

Noah Clowney led New York with 19 points in the game. His dunk in the last 10 seconds of the game gave the Nets a 4-point lead.

“To be honest, I thought I smoked it,” he said about thinking he missed the opportunity to score.

The shot created a bigger gap for the Lakers to make a comeback. The Nets went on the road to face the Cleveland Cavaliers this past Tuesday night before going to Chicago to face the Bulls Thursday night.
