A family in Gary, Indiana, is grieving and seeking justice after Kia Tidwell, a 42-year-old mother of six, was killed by a stray bullet while driving home Friday night. Tidwell was passing a McDonald’s near Grant Street and 5th Avenue when gunfire erupted from an altercation outside the restaurant. She was struck in the head and crashed into a tree. No arrests have been made, and the Gary Police Department, along with the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force, is investigating the tragic incident.

The Tidwell family, joined by elected officials, held a press conference on Monday to call for answers and demand justice. Gary Mayor Eddie Melton emphasized the collective responsibility to prevent such senseless violence from happening again. “This is not just their loss, it’s the city of Gary’s loss,” Melton said, urging the community to come together. Tidwell’s eldest daughter, Islynn, who was on the phone with her mother when the shooting occurred, described the heartbreaking moment when she heard the gunfire and her mother’s car crash.

Kia’s mother, Charlotte Tidwell, expressed determination to seek justice for her daughter, vowing that the fight for answers would not end. “We’re going to take it as far as we can. It doesn’t stop here,” she said. A GoFundMe set up to support the family has raised over $16,000, while police continue to urge witnesses to come forward with any information that could lead to an arrest.
