By Joshua Garcia
Philadelphia’s own former welterweight champion Danny ‘Swift’ Garcia will take his favorite stage Saturday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Whether it is the abundance of Puerto Rican fans that flock to support their guy or the fact it’s a mere 90 miles from his home, Garcia will look for any advantage in what is being widely promoted as a comeback fight to exhibit what he has been working on since his only bout of 2019.
Leading into Danny Garcia’s 2017 calendar of scheduled fights team Swift couldn’t have been more excited for the future with a 33-0 record. Since however, Garcia has gone 2-2 over that time span and has lost not only his titles but also his reputation and standing in a sport which quickly forgets contenders who fall short.
Once believed to be in the conversation with an Errol Spence, Shawn Porter, and Keith Thurman, the 147 pound weight class sped past Garcia, after losing to two of those men and then being laughed at by Errol Spence upon proposition of a 2020 fight. Garcia has so many things to prove to not only the boxing world, but himself and his team as well, and it starts with a dominant showing this Saturday in Brooklyn against Ivan Redkach.
Ivan Redkach a tough Ukrainian who has taken up residence in Boxing’s current capital of Oxnard, California looks to finally notch a win against a big opponent. Redkach’s biggest bouts came against Tevin Farmer and John Molina Jr. who dominated the welterweight from the Ukraine. Two of Redkach’s four career losses were from a knockout by his opponent neither of which had the power of a Garcia.
Danny Swift Garcia has a knack for working the body and wearing his opponents down. His last fight against Adrian Granados must have felt like he had been through several 15 round fights with the punishment he took in seven rounds before the referee had mercy on him and counted Granados out after picking himself up off the canvas several times. Garcia’s footwork which has always been what limited his career’s ceiling will not matter against an opponent the likes of Redkach, whom he should get past easy. This is however an audition for 2020 and if Danny Garcia wants to get anywhere near a date with Errol Spence, Manny Pacquaio, or a rematch with Shawn Porter, he better show out in Barclay’s in front of his home crowd.
The New York Beacon sees Danny Garcia by 5th round stoppage.
