*The Washington D. C. mother of a 12-year-old suspected carjacker turned him in to the police after his teenage accomplice was fatally shot by a cop.

The boy’s mother called the police on October 31 after seeing a photo of her child the authorities shared in relation to the carjacking case, the Daily Mail reports. His alleged 13-year-old accomplice, a seventh grader named Vernard Toney Jr., was a suspect in a number of previous carjackings. Toney was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer during the latest incident.

The other minor was not injured in the shooting. He was recently processed in a juvenile court, the Daily Mail reports.

“(Toney) was known to the Metropolitan Police Department, and it’s just unfortunate that this particular incident happened on Saturday night that caused him to no longer be here,” said Acting Chief of Police Pamela Smith.

According to a DC police detective, the officer was seated inside his vehicle and checking his phone when the two boys approached the car from behind. Surveillance video captured the boys approaching the car from behind.
