Mike Tyson, the legendary boxer known for his ferocious style and dominance in the ring, once unwittingly crossed paths with a notorious serial killer. During a 2017 appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” Tyson recounted the unsettling experience of being interviewed by Dale Hausner, a man who would later be exposed as one of the “Serial Shooters” responsible for multiple killings in Phoenix. The encounter took place in 2006 when Hausner, who also worked as a boxing reporter, requested an interview with Tyson at a gym in Phoenix. Describing Hausner as a “really small guy but really nice,” Tyson had no inkling of the horrors that would soon unfold.
A few days after the interview, Tyson returned to the gym only to find it surrounded by SWAT teams. Initially joking with officers, Tyson quickly realized the gravity of the situation when they showed him a photo of Hausner. Confused, Tyson recalled apologizing if he had offended the man, only to be shocked when the police informed him that Hausner was, in fact, a serial killer. The officers explained that while Hausner liked Tyson, he harbored no such feelings for the 28 people he shot and the eight he killed during a terrifying spree of drive-by shootings in Phoenix.
Hausner, along with his accomplice Samuel Dieteman, was part of a duo that terrorized the city between August 2005 and June 2006, committing multiple murders and wounding several others. Their methamphetamine-fueled rampage finally came to an end in August 2006 when they were arrested. Hausner was later found guilty of 80 felony charges and sentenced to death, though he took his own life in 2013 while on death row. Meanwhile, Dieteman received a life sentence without the possibility of parole, and remains incarcerated at the Arizona State Prison Complex – Safford.
