The New York Mets hosted the New York Yankees last week at CitiField for the first Subway Series of the year. New York won temporary bragging rights as the Metropolitans won both games. Game one saw the Mets dominate 6-3 with Pete Alonso going 3-3 and getting on base 4 times. Aaron Judge hit his 38th home runs but unfortunately the rest of the offense struggled as they were 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position. Said the Polar Bear after the game, “I never played in a major league playoff game before, but if I had to guess this is what it would be like.”
Game two was much closer as the Mets behind Max Scherzer dominated the Yankees 3-2. Scherzer struck out Judge 3 times and once again the Bombers offense was dormant. On this night they were 0-7 with RISP. With the game tied at 2, Yanks manager Aaron Boone elected to pitch to Starling Marte. The move backfired as Marte singled to left driving in Eduardo Escobar with the winning run. Said Marte of the two-game series, “I like playing teams that like to win and also like to compete and battle because it forces us as players to reach a new level. “I like to showcase those skills, especially against those good teams.”
The team with the best record in baseball, rebounded by taking 3 of 4 from the Kansas City Royals when they returned home last Thursday. Looking for the sweep in the last game, the bullpen failed them as they ended up losing 8-5 as Clay Holmes gave up a 3-run homer to Salvador Perez in the ninth inning. Holmes had not given up a home run all year. in 20 save situations, Holmes had only blown 3 saves. Said Boone, a really good power hitter caught hi,. It’s one of those that you’re not going to see very often.” Judge was kept in the park not adding to his home run total until last night when the Seattle Mariners came to town to start a 3-games series.
Judge came into the game with 42 home runs and 10 in his last 10 games. With one runner on in the second inning, Judge connects for his 43rd home run of the season as New York went on for the 7-2 win. As he has done all year, Judge deflects his accomplishments and is quick to compliment his teammates. “Like I’ve said every single day, my teammates are the ones that have helped me out this year. I’m just trying to match their energy and match what they’re doing, especially when you’ve got DJ LeMahieu up there at the top of the lineup hitting close to .300, constantly on base and working the count. It helps everybody.”
As far as the Mets are concerned, they began a 3-game series Monday night against the Washington Nationals. By nights end, New York extended their winning streak after the 7-3 win. Scherzer was on the mound again, this time he gave up only 2-earned runs, striking out 5 in 6.2 innings. The offense helped as Alonso went dep in the 3rd inning and Lindor cleared the wall in the 8th.
Tonight, will be the return of starter Jacob deGrom who has not pitched in a major league game in 391 days. In his rehab start, deGrom threw 67 pitches last Wednesday giving up 2-home runs. Manager Buck Showalter will have him on a short leash hoping to avoid a setback. deGrom could be the missing piece come the postseason.
After the National, the Mets play a 5-game series against the 2nd place Atlanta Braves. As of Tuesday night’s action, the Braves were 3 1/2 games behind the Mets.
It will be interesting to see the Mets rotation lines up Scherzer and deGrom when the Subway Series comes to Yankee Stadium August 22nd and 23rd.
