It could have been one of the most devastating losses in New York Mets history. They were coming off a 2-0 win Tuesday night as Tylor Megill pitching in his second straight start gave up zero runs in 5.1 innings. Megill gave up only 3 hits while striking 5. So,on get away day, the Mets sent out Max Scherzer for his second start. Scherzer escaped a bases loaded first inning giving up his only run. Scherzer would not give another run which included 5-hits and 7-strikeouts. Said of his first inning struggle, “I just wasn’t completely executing every pitch where I wanted it to be.”

Pete Alonso continued his hot start driving in 5-runs (home run and 2-doubles) as the Mets looked like they had a laugher on their hands. New York plated 4-runs in the top of the 6th, increasing the score to 8-1. Not laying down for the rest of the game, Philly would score 2-runs in the 6th and 2 more in the 7th and before you know it, they were only down 8-5. Both teams scored one run each as the Mets held on for the 9-6 win.

“We did an excellent job of pouring it on all day,” Said Alonso. Starting as the DH instead of his preferred first base position he said, “we had excellent at-bats one through nine and that’s what it takes to win these tough, divisional games. Alonso, in the first 7-games collected 8 hits, 2 home runs and 10 rbi.

So, the New York Mets and first year manager Buck Showalter make their home debut at Citi Fields Friday at 1:15pm against the Arizona Diamondbacks with a record of 5-2 (6-1 if they didn’t give up 5 runs in the 8th in the third game loss). Showalter will be managing his first opening day in four years. When asked about his feeling on Friday he said, “I’m not there yet. Right now, we got a lot of things going on trying to stay on top of. Going to look forward to getting a game or two under their belt and into their routine.”
