Juan Soto is officially a New York Met, and he seems quite thrilled about it. The 26-year-old phenom was introduced by the Mets in his first press conference with his new team this past week and made sure to rub salt in the wounds of his former team’s fans. The one-time Yankee revealed that he hasn’t spoken to any of his past teammates since their World Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers—a series in which he scored six runs in five games and posted an on-base percentage over .500.
It sounds shocking that while deciding where he was going to carve out his legacy for the next 15 years, Soto didn’t once reach out to his now-former teammates. But this lack of communication during such a stressful and monumental period shows how little he connected with the Yankee organization during his time in the Bronx. Perhaps there was some animosity brewing during the season and throughout the playoffs that boiled over once the Yanks came up short, but to the naked eye watching the Bombers’ season, there was no such sign. Said Soto on his decision to move from the Bronx to Queens, “the Mets is a great organization and what they have done in the past couple — showing the ability to grow a team, grow a dynasty — is one of the most important things. What you were seeing from the other side was unbelievable. The future that this team has a lot to do with my decision.”
In addition to his passive-aggressiveness toward the Yankees, Soto appeared genuinely happy about joining his new team, which is coming off a surprise NLCS appearance. Soto will look to be the missing piece that propels the Mets to their first World Series title in nearly 40 years. After his spectacular one-and-done season in pinstripes, it will be no surprise if the future Hall of Famer does just that.
