*A Maryland woman has been charged in the gruesome murder of her own mother, and the accused killer’s daughter aided in the crime.
According to the George’s County Police Department, Candace Craig, 44, is facing first and second murder charges over the slaying of Margaret Craig, 71, and the killing was fueled by credit card fraud allegations, Law&Crime reports.
The elder Craig allegedly discovered that her daughter was stealing from her and threatened to report her “for fraudulent use of her credit card,” detectives wrote in statements, per Law&Crime.
Candace’s daughter, Salia Hardy, 19, allegedly told police that the fraud allegations prompted the attack. Hardy said she “discovered [her grandmother’s] remains in a blue bin in her bedroom.”
According to the charging documents … Candace convinced her daughter to help her “dismember the [grandmother] with a chainsaw.” A barbecue grill was involved in an attempt to dispose of the body and evidence, authorities in Prince George’s County said. Mother and daughter allegedly tried to “burn her remains on a grill and a fire.”
The heinous slaying was ultimately discovered when a male relative called 911 last Friday and said he “had not communicated with Margaret Craig for several days and was worried for her welfare,” per the charging document.
Officers showed up at Margaret’s house and Candace allowed them to conduct a search of the residence.
“When the officers entered the basement, they immediately smelled the odor of decomposition,” police alleged in a weekend press release.
“Upon entering the basement, officers immediately recognized the smell of putrefaction and observed blood and tissue on the floor near three white plastic trash bags,” the charging documents say. “Officers observed in an open trash bag what appeared to be brain matter.”
