There are two things that have been consistent in the career of Daniel Jones career as quarterback of the New York Football Giants. Injuries and turnovers.

Let’s begin with the injuries. 2019 – Jones suffered a high ankle sprain in a Week 13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. He missed two games. November 2020 – Injured right hamstring third quarter week 12 at Cincinnati missed 1 game. December 2020 Ankle injury against Arizona missed 1 game. October 2021 concussed against Dallas but was cleared to play the next week. November 2021 season ending neck injury against the Eagles placed on IR and missed the last 6 games. 2022 – Despite an ankle sprain after getting sacked, he did not miss a game. 2023 pinched nerve in his neck against Miami. Last year in week 6 against the Raiders tore ACL in his right knee against the Raiders in week 9 ending his season.

When he wasn’t hurt, Jones turnovers were a big reason the team struggled. As a starter after getting picked as the #6 player in the 2019 draft, Jones enters this season with a record of 22-36-1. Jones has turned the ball over via fumble or interception 64 times. Granted, the offensive line has been horrible and the organization is as much to blame by not drafting, trading or signing solid free agent quality offensive players to protect him. Despite those major flaws, the powers that be agreed to re-sign to a whopping 4-year, $160 million dollar contract extension last March. They then allowed one of the most productive offensive players in team history Saquon Barkley to test the free agent market. He burned the Giants by signing with their hated division rival Philadelphia Eagles.

Daniel Jones did not play in the first preseason game against the Detroit Lions at MetLife Stadium. He did start this past Saturday when Big Blue was on the road against the Houston Texans. Jones was in mid-season form in the 28-10 loss as he turned the ball 2 times. Jones completed 11 of 18 passes for 138 yards. Said third year head coach Brian Daboll of the game, “tough to win a game when you turn the ball over five times.” On Jones day, he said “I wanted to make sure we had enough plays where we were throwing it down the field, giving opportunities to throw it down the field. Again, there was some good things, good to get him out here and then a couple things we’ll learn from and that’s what these things are for.”

It was Jones first game since tearing his ACL last year and he was encouraged despite the turnover on how he felt. “I feel good physically. Yeah, the knee felt good. Felt really good and excited to be out there, grateful for all the people who’ve helped me get to this point, all the doctors and trainers and staff we have here who have helped me. It was fun to be out there. Didn’t start perfect, like I said, but we got going and I felt good.”

There is a lot riding on the New York Football Giants This year. Daboll’s job will be on the line based on wins and losses. Jones has to justify the new contract as the team has upgraded the offensive line.

The Giants end their pre-season schedule with their annual game against the New York Jets Saturday. Expect the starters to play at least 3 quarters. Jones has to take his game to the next level with hopes it carries over when they open up the 2024 season home Sunday September 8th against the Minnesota Vikings. The team they beat in the wild card playoff game 2 years ago. The only time Jones got them into the playoffs.
