The New York Jets looked like they would upset their AFC East rivals the New England Patriots last Monday night at MetLife stadium.

Big plays by the offense and defensive coverage placed the Jets ahead at halftime. Yet an interception in the fourth quarter and a field goal in the last few seconds of the game ended that hope as the Jets lost 30-27.

“We have to figure out a way to finish the fourth quarter the right way,” said Jets Head Coach Adam Gase said.  “We can’t allow them to have as many plays as we allowed them to have and really the whole second half.  We have to hold onto the ball longer on offense.”

Prior to the game, a win seemed unlikely. The Jets had not won a game this season and key players like QB Sam Darnold, K Sam Ficken, and DL Quinnen Williams were on the injury list.

However, the Jets offense stepped. New York was first on the scoreboard with a field goal by K Sergio Castillo in the first Quarter.  Patriots QB Cam Newton scored the first touchdown with about 3:41 remaining in the first quarter.  Jets answered in the second quarter with a forced fumble by DL Folorunso Fatukasi and two touchdowns passes by QB Joe Flacco who stepped in again for Sam Darnold. Jets led 20-10 at halftime.

“I just know that we weren’t as clean as we were earlier in the game,” Flacco said about the loss of the 10 point lead in the second half.

An interception of Flacco’s pass in the fourth quarter quickly changed the direction of the game.

“So, I’ve been rattling it around in my head and I don’t think I would have made a different decision in the moment, but obviously I wish I had that one back,”Flacco said.

Flacco had 18 of 25 completed passes for 262 yds. Newton had 27 of 35 completed passes for 274.

“I think that we were prepared for the quarterback designed runs,” Gase said. “We weren’t sure if that would be what they were looking to do game plan-wise because most teams change up how they run the ball against us a little bit. I don’t think they were looking to see how many hits he could take running the football.”

The loss brings the Jets record to 0-9. The circumstance could create an opportunity for a top draft pick. New York has a bye week.
