The NBA draft came and went on Thursday night without the New York Knicks making a single move. They traded their first round pick this year to Portland before the trade deadline for swingman Josh Hart who came and had an impact for the Knicks off the bench. The Knicks lost another possible first round pick when the Dallas Mavericks failed to make the playoffs this season, which allowed Dallas to keep this year’s 10th overall pick, which would have gone to the Knicks had the pick fallen outside of the top ten. The Knicks did sign an undrafted free agent after the draft by giving Jacob Toppin, out of the University of Kentucky, a two-way contract. Toppin is the younger brother of Knicks forward Obi Toppin.
The Knicks missed out on making a trade for two All-Star caliber players who were available. Shooting guard Bradley Beal was traded from Washington to Phoenix. Washington then traded former Knick first round selection, Kristaps Porzingis, to the Boston Celtics. The moves have increased both teams’ chances of winning a championship. Either star would have given the Knicks the third star they need to legitimately compete for a championship. Now the Knicks continue to search for that missing piece.
