The New York Knicks came out strong against New York City product Donovan Mitchell and the Utah Jazz, leading early by nine points then Mitchell exploded for 36 points and the Jazz defeated the Knicks 108-93.

“I thought we fought but it felt like we were a step behind most of the night,” said Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau. “When you have a guy like Mitchell, you know it’s going to require a lot from you. You’re going to be blitzing. (Rudy) Gobert is going to be putting a lot of pressure on the rim. And then (Jordan) Clarkson as well, Clarkson is a big-time scorer, so you know you got to defend him in the game.”

RJ Barrett, who scored a team-high 24 points, discussed playing with the young Knicks bench, perhaps the future of the team. “For the most part, we get stops and just fly up the court,” Barrett said. “Obi (Toppin) and Quick (Immanuel Quickley), they make a huge difference out there, you know, Quick pushes the ball and Obi is a freak athlete too, Jericho (Sims) too, so it we automatically fly up the court and it is a little different.”

The Knicks hosted the Atlanta Hawks and Trey Young Tuesday night. They travel to Charlotte Wednesday before going to Miami to face the first place Heat Friday night.
