The New York Knicks blew an early lead in the first quarter and fell
to the Los Angeles Clippers in a 126-113 loss Wednesday night at
Madison Square Garden.
New York was outscored by Los Angeles in the second, third and fourth
quarters. The Injuries, including one Cameron Payne sustained in the
first quarter, limited the Knicks, while the Clippers arose from their
sleep after the first quarter.
“It started at the end of the second, so we didn’t close the second
great,” said Coach Tom Thibodeau about the Clippers comeback.
“Offensively, I thought we scored enough.
The Knicks were ahead 33-20 at the end of the first quarter.
Karl-Anthony Towns led New York with 13 points and Payne added 10
points at the time. Payne fell and grabbed his ankle after a shot in
the first quarter. Later he played about 6:15 minutes in the second
quarter, which was about half as much as the first quarter and made
five points. This was not good for New York considering their other
two point guards, Jalen Brunson and Miles McBride were out with
injuries.
The Clippers stepped up in the second quarter. James Harden scored
more points in half the amount of playing time. He scored six points
in 12 minutes in the first quarter and seven points in about 6:43
minutes of playing in the second. The Knicks were ahead 55-54 at
halftime, lost their lead in the third quarter and trailed 94-84 at
the start of the fourth quarter.
“I mean, they hit shots, and they got hot,” Towns said about the third
quarter. “So, we have to do a better job of making it more difficult
on them defensively.”
Karl-Anthony Towns led New York with 34 points and 14 total rebounds.
He had 4 3-pointers. Overall, the Knicks were far less successful with
3-pointers making only 38.2%, compared to the Clippers who made 53.3%
of their 3-pointers.
James Harden led the Clippers with 29 points. He had six rebounds, six
assists, two blocked shots and made 6 3-pointers.
The Knicks next travel to Milwaukee to face the Bucks.
