The Brooklyn Nets lost the second match of their 2-game series this weekend against the New York Knicks, 114-104, Sunday night at Madison Square Garden.
Brooklyn was limited in scoring as New York put pressure on Cam Thomas, and the Nets were unable to establish the same type of control. The Nets kept up with the Knicks early in the game, but fell further behind after halftime.
“We could not defend enough in this game to get the win,” said Coach Jordi Fernández about the difference maker between the first half and the second half of the game. “They kept blitzing Cam Thomas.”
Thomas had 43 points Friday night and 16 points Sunday night. The Nets lost only by two points, 124-122, on Friday night.
Sunday, Brooklyn trailed New York 30-29 at the end of the first quarter, 60-57 at halftime, and 95-81 by the end of the third quarter.
Cam Johnson, who led the Nets with 22 points, said Brooklyn missed some of the opportunities to close the scoring gap later in the game, as they had did when they faced the Knicks Friday night.
“It just shows you can’t rely on fighting back like that every third, late third, early fourth quarter,” he said.
The Nets were without extra help to defend power forward/center Karl-Anthony Towns, due to injuries. Towns led the Knicks with 26 points and 15 rebounds.
The Nets went on to face the Charlotte Hornets Tuesday evening before traveling to Philadelphia Friday to face the 76ers.
