Kevin Hart has had a challenging year, marked by two major film releases that were both met with disappointment. The 45-year-old actor and comedian starred in Lift and Borderlands in 2024, both of which were heavily criticized by both professional reviewers and audiences. These films, despite the initial excitement surrounding them, fell flat in terms of both box office performance and reception.

Borderlands, in particular, has been widely regarded as one of the biggest flops of the year. According to the online entertainment outlet Collider, the Eli Roth-directed action-comedy ranks as the fifth-worst movie flop of summer 2024. The film’s poor reviews and low earnings have overshadowed the involvement of big names like Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jack Black. In fact, Borderlands was pulled from theaters on September 5 due to its lackluster performance, both critically and commercially, grossing only $33 million globally against a production budget estimated between $110 million and $120 million.

Rotten Tomatoes added fuel to the fire, giving Borderlands a 51 percent score on its “Popcornmeter,” further emphasizing its underperformance. One reviewer on the site criticized the waste of talent and budget on subpar CGI, while others commented on the uninspired script and lackluster performances. Despite these scathing remarks, a few viewers expressed their enjoyment, describing it as a fun popcorn movie that was better than its negative reviews suggested.

The failure of Borderlands was preceded by another disappointing release for Hart, Lift, which premiered on Netflix in January 2024. Lift earned a mere 33 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, adding to Hart’s struggles in the film industry this year. Alongside Borderlands, this poor reception has placed a spotlight on Hart’s recent film ventures, which seem to have hit a rough patch.

Outside of his professional life, Hart has also faced scrutiny due to his association with Sean “Diddy” Combs, who was charged with serious crimes in September. Video footage from a 2010 album release party hosted by Diddy, featuring Hart, resurfaced amid the scandal, raising further questions about the comedian’s ties to the music mogul. This has only added to the storm of media attention surrounding Hart in what has already been a turbulent year.
