Indiana law enforcement responded to a disturbing call last week from a white woman who confessed to attacking her pregnant neighbor with a bat. The incident, which took place on the evening of August 20, involved 49-year-old Angela Canaday, who admitted to the assault when she contacted the New Castle Police Department. According to CBS 4 Indy, officers arrived at the scene on Stonegate Drive after receiving a report of a woman being struck with a bat. The situation escalated when it was revealed that the victim was not only Canaday’s neighbor but also pregnant, raising the gravity of the incident.

The victim recounted to police that she was outside her home, calling for a friend’s child, when Canaday unexpectedly emerged from her house in a fit of rage. The woman reported that Canaday began shouting racial slurs at her. In response, the victim approached Canaday, urging her to be mindful of her language due to the presence of children nearby. This, however, provoked Canaday further. She retreated into her home, only to return with a black wooden bat, escalating the confrontation to violence. According to the police report, Canaday yelled more racial slurs and threats before striking the pregnant woman with the bat, leaving her fearful for her life.

Canaday has since been charged with battery resulting in bodily injury to a pregnant woman and intimidation, both felony charges. While these charges are serious, it remains unclear whether she will also face enhanced hate crime charges due to her use of racial slurs during the attack. The incident has shocked the New Castle community and raised concerns about escalating racial tensions and violence.
